Why Is My Furnace Blowing Cold Air?

A furnace blowing cold air may be circulating room air with the fan set to On, or the blower may be running while the burners are not completing ignition. Check the thermostat and filter once, then note what the furnace does during one heat call.

Gas odor, smoke, a carbon monoxide alarm, repeated breaker trips, or a furnace that keeps trying and stopping changes the situation. Shut it down and get safety help instead of forcing another cycle.

Fan On can circulate cool room air between calls. Set it to Auto while observing the next heat call.

Heating sequence

Note whether the inducer, ignition, burners, and blower start in order. Do not open the cabinet to inspect them.

Fan On can create a false symptom

If the thermostat fan is set to On, the blower can run when the furnace is not heating. That air may feel cool even though the furnace is waiting for the next call. Set the fan to Auto and make sure the thermostat is set to Heat.

If the blower runs during an actual heat call and the supply air stays cold, the issue is past a simple fan setting.

Why heat may stop while the blower continues

Do not bypass a safety control or repeatedly reset the furnace. If you smell gas, leave the home and call from outside.
