Is a Burning Electrical Smell From HVAC Equipment an Emergency?

Yes, a sharp electrical or melting-plastic smell deserves a shutdown before troubleshooting. Turn the system off at the thermostat; if the odor is strong, smoke is visible, or a breaker trips again, leave the equipment off and treat it as a safety problem.
