Note whether the display is blank, whether the mode is set correctly, and whether the setting is above or below room temperature as appropriate.
When the heat or air conditioning stops, the first question isn't always which part failed. It's whether the home's uncomfortable or unsafe - and an older farmhouse past the town limits can lose heat differently than a compact in-town house.
Start with the safe next step, then tell us what changed. A clear symptom report gives us a better starting point than guessing at a capacitor, control board, blower motor, refrigerant issue, or heat exchanger.
Leave the home and call 911 or the appropriate utility emergency line if you smell gas, a carbon monoxide alarm sounds, or anyone has symptoms that could be related to carbon monoxide exposure. Don't stay inside to locate the source, restart a fuel-burning appliance, or use a switch that could create a spark.
Smoke, melted wiring, repeated breaker trips, or unusual heat around electrical equipment also calls for caution. Turn the system off only if you can do so without opening a panel or touching damaged components. If water's spreading near electrical equipment, keep clear.
A loss of heating or cooling without those warning signs may still need timely attention when severe weather's pushing the home beyond a safe temperature for a child, older adult, or someone with a health condition affected by heat or cold.
These observations can make a service request more useful, but they're not a substitute for diagnosis. Stop as soon as something looks unsafe.

A visibly loaded filter can restrict airflow. Record its size and condition, but do not remove an equipment panel or force a filter into place.
Note which rooms have little or no airflow. Make sure supply registers and return grilles are not covered by furniture, rugs, or stored items.
Observe the indoor unit and nearby drain area. If you see water or ice, turn the system off if safe and report what you saw. Do not chip ice away.
A breaker that trips again is a stop sign. Do not keep resetting it, open an access panel, or work on wiring or gas components.
"The system runs but the air's warm" is more useful than "I think the compressor's bad." Share when the problem began, whether it's constant, and whether anything changed just before it happened.
Note no cooling, warm air, a frozen outdoor line, water near the indoor coil, or a system that starts and stops repeatedly. Turn it off if it's icing, leaking, or making an electrical noise.
Share no heat, a failure to ignite, a strange noise, a burning smell, or a thermostat that calls for heat without a response. Don't try to diagnose a flame or combustion problem yourself.
Tell us which mode's failing, whether the outdoor unit runs, and whether the indoor air's weak, lukewarm, or absent. Controls, airflow, defrost operation, and equipment balance can all matter.
Before you call us, write down the address, the best way to reach the equipment, and the system type if you know it. A photo of the equipment label can help us identify the manufacturer and model.
Also note the thermostat setting, indoor temperature if you have a reliable reading, visible water or ice, an error code, unusual sounds, recent maintenance, a power interruption, a filter change, or a new noise. If the equipment's in a crawl space, attic, locked room, or managed property, tell us about the access situation before we visit.
Treat a gas odor, carbon monoxide alarm, smoke, serious electrical symptom, or water near electrical equipment as urgent. A complete loss of heat or cooling also needs timely help when the home is becoming unsafe for someone vulnerable to temperature.
Leave the home and call 911 or the appropriate utility emergency line from outside. Do not use switches, flames, or the equipment, and do not go back in until responders or the utility clear the hazard.
Look at the thermostat, note the filter condition if it is easy to reach, check vents and returns, observe water or ice without touching equipment, and look at the electrical panel only from the outside. Do not open panels, handle wiring, or keep resetting a breaker that trips again.
Tell the service provider whether it is no heat, no cooling, weak airflow, water, ice, unusual noise, or a complete shutdown. Share when it began and what changed. You do not need to identify the failed part before the system is diagnosed.
If the home is safe, tell us the symptom, equipment type, and what changed. For gas, carbon monoxide, smoke, or sparking, call emergency services first.
