Your heat pump goes into defrost, kicks on auxiliary heat (the backup strips), or blows air that feels cooler than you'd expect in heating mode. None of that is automatically wrong. What matters is whether it's a normal part of the cycle or a real fault, and that's what we're here to sort out.
Tell us the mode, the outdoor temperature, the ice pattern, whether auxiliary heat's running, and whether the house ever catches up to the setpoint. Shut it off for smoke, an electrical smell, or water near the wiring. Don't wait on any of those three.
In heating mode, a heat pump can put out air that feels cooler than furnace air even while it's warming the house just fine. In cooling mode, it acts like a regular AC. Three things always deserve a real test: auxiliary heat running nonstop, a house that never reaches the setpoint, and ice that won't clear.
We start with the signal from the thermostat, the airflow, and both fans, outdoor and indoor. Then we move to the defrost cycle, which typically runs 5 to 10 minutes, plus the electrical readings, the refrigerant lines, the reversing valve, and whatever controls match what you're seeing.
We tie whatever repair we recommend to what we actually measured. Ice alone doesn't prove a refrigerant problem. Heavy auxiliary-heat use doesn't by itself mean the heat pump has failed.
A heat pump tied to older ductwork can have a comfort problem that's really about airflow or balance, not the heat pump itself. A newer compact system raises different access and control questions instead. We look at the house and the equipment together, not just one or the other.

Do not cover the outdoor unit, chip at the ice, or bypass controls. Never keep running equipment that's smoking, sparking, or smells like burning electrical. Shut it off first.
