Does an R-22 air conditioner have to be replaced?
No. The EPA doesn't require homeowners to replace an existing air conditioner that uses R-22. Since 2020, service has relied on recycled, reclaimed, or previously produced HCFC-22 rather than newly produced or imported refrigerant.
R-22 is one factor, not an automatic verdict. A sound older system with an unrelated electrical problem may still be repairable. A leaking R-22 system with an expensive component failure is a different calculation, because refrigerant supply, repair scope, and remaining equipment life all matter. Refrigerant work belongs with us or another qualified technician: casual substitutions aren't a safe shortcut.
