Cold air in heat mode, weak airflow, outdoor ice, water, or a system that won't start can come from several different faults. You don't have to know which part quit before we know the right next step.

An air-source heat pump moves heat between the home and outdoor air, so it can handle both heating and cooling. A comfort problem can involve airflow, controls, the fan, the outdoor unit, refrigerant, or the defrost cycle. These checks look for an obvious operating issue without opening the equipment, and they won't tell you everything, but they're a fast start.
Confirm the mode and set temperature, and note whether the system's heating, cooling, running nonstop, or not starting at all.
A visibly dirty filter can restrict airflow. Check it about once a month, and clean or replace it based on the filter type you have.
Make sure supply registers are open. Furniture, rugs, or stored items blocking a return grille can choke the whole system.
From a safe distance, look for leaves, snow, grass, or debris packed against the cabinet or coil. Do not remove panels or reach through the grille.
You can look for an obvious tripped breaker if you're comfortable doing so. If it trips again, leave it alone and call us for a diagnosis.
If the checks do not restore comfort, record what you observed and arrange an evaluation. ENERGY STAR maintenance guidance also recommends keeping filters and indoor and outdoor units clear of debris.
Light frost can be part of normal winter operation. During a defrost cycle, indoor air may feel cooler briefly and water may drip outside as ice melts. Thick ice that persists is different: restricted airflow, a fan problem, refreezing water, low refrigerant, or a defrost-control fault may be involved.
If the outdoor unit is frozen solid, turn the system off if doing so is safe and keep people away. Do not chip the ice, pour boiling water on it, or use a refrigerant product to speed up the process. Carrier's troubleshooting guidance also distinguishes normal defrost frost from thick ice that needs attention.
Repair is often the first question when the problem is isolated, the system has been dependable, and the correction is manageable. Replacement deserves a fuller conversation when major components are involved, failures keep returning, safety or refrigerant concerns are present, or the equipment no longer fits the home's needs.
Ask what was tested, which part caused the symptom, what happens if the work is postponed, and how the system's age and service history affect the decision. The Department of Energy notes that site characteristics and intended use matter; a generic age or dollar threshold cannot answer for every Woodsboro home.
Leave the home for gas odor, smoke, a strong burning electrical smell, or a carbon monoxide alarm. Once outside, contact 911 or the appropriate utility or emergency provider. Do not go back in to reset the thermostat or inspect the equipment.
