Thermostat Says Cooling but the House Is Getting Warmer
A thermostat that says Cooling is showing a request, not proof that the air conditioner is removing heat. The outdoor unit, compressor, indoor blower, airflow, and refrigerant circuit still have to work together.
Make one safe pass through the controls and visible equipment. If the outdoor unit stays silent, the breaker trips again, the coil is frozen, or the house is becoming dangerously hot, stop testing and call for help.
Check the call
Set the thermostat to Cool, choose a temperature below the room temperature, and put the fan on Auto. Check for a schedule, Away mode, or temporary hold.
Watch the system

Start with the thermostat settings

Why can a cooling system run without cooling the house?

A condenser fan, capacitor, contactor, compressor, or control failure can stop outdoor cooling even while the indoor fan keeps running. Low refrigerant is another possibility, but refrigerant isn't consumed like fuel. A low charge usually points to a leak or an earlier service problem, and diagnosing it takes operating measurements and qualified service, not a guess.
An undersized system, major duct loss, or a sudden jump in heat entering the home can also push the indoor temperature up on a ninety-degree afternoon. A new failure's more likely to bring warm air, no outdoor-unit operation, ice, unusual noise, or an abrupt change from normal performance.
What can you do while the temperature is rising?
Close shades or curtains on windows getting direct sun. Skip the oven, the clothes dryer, and other heat-producing appliances until the house is stable. Keep exterior doors and windows closed when the outdoor air's hotter than the indoor air.

Move children, older adults, people with chronic health conditions, and pets to the coolest safe part of the home.
