What Are the Signs of a Bad AC Capacitor?
A capacitor helps the compressor and fan motors start and keep running. When it weakens, one part of the outdoor unit may struggle while another still looks fine.
The symptoms make a capacitor a reasonable suspect, not a confirmed diagnosis. Note what the system is doing from a safe distance, then let us test the electrical fault.
Listen without guessing

What a bad AC capacitor can look like
The outdoor unit may hum or buzz without starting, especially when the thermostat asks for cooling. A condenser fan that won't spin, warm air from the vents, a slow or inconsistent startup, repeated short cycles, or a unit that shuts down soon after starting are other useful clues. We may also find a rounded top, a cracked casing, or oily residue during an inspection, but don't remove the service panel yourself to look for those signs.

Why these signs do not prove the capacitor failed
Several parts share the same startup sequence. The thermostat sends the cooling call, the controls and contactor pass power to the outdoor unit, the capacitor supports the motors, and the fan motor and compressor have to start and keep running. A fault anywhere in that chain can cause a hum, a no-start, a shutdown, or a warm-air complaint.
A tripped breaker, lost power, a bad thermostat signal, a worn contactor, damaged wiring, a failed fan motor, a stuck or overheated compressor, low starting voltage, a refrigerant problem, or restricted airflow can all look the same from outside. Carrier's no-start guidance lists several of these look-alikes. Replacing based only on a sound or a stationary fan can miss the real problem.

What you can safely check before AC repair
Confirm the thermostat is set to Cool and the target temperature is below the room temperature. If its replaceable-battery display is blank or fading, follow the thermostat instructions before you call us.
Look at the electrical panel without removing an HVAC cabinet cover. If the AC breaker is tripped, move it fully to Off and reset it once, only if there's no burning smell or visible damage. Leave it off if it trips again.
From a safe distance, watch whether the outdoor unit clicks, hums, buzzes, or stays silent. Look through the grille without touching it, and note whether the fan moves, indoor air is flowing, and the air feels cool. Don't touch wiring, reach through the fan grille, remove the service panel, or try to discharge the capacitor.

How we confirm the failure
After we make the equipment electrically safe, we inspect the capacitor and connections, note its rated capacitance and voltage, usually something like 45 microfarads at 370 or 440 volts, and measure actual capacitance with the proper meter. We compare that reading against the rating and allowed tolerance printed right on the capacitor.

Should you keep running the AC?
Leave the system off if the outdoor unit only hums, the fan won't turn, the breaker trips, you smell something burning, or the unit keeps trying and failing to start. Those symptoms point to an electrical component or motor under strain. More runs of the thermostat won't fix the fault.
If the system is still cooling but starts differently than usual, write down the change and call us before it turns into a no-cooling failure. Most capacitor problems get confirmed by measurement, not appearance, so don't wait around for visible damage.
