When the weather is the risk

Only when the home is safe
Stop if anything smells burned, looks damaged, or trips electrical protection again. Do not remove panels, handle refrigerant lines, bypass a safety switch, test live wiring, or work on gas controls.
Confirm that it has power, the mode matches the season, and the setpoint calls for heating or cooling. Note a blank screen or repeated starts and stops.
If there's no burning smell or visible damage, reset the labeled HVAC breaker once. Leave it off if it trips again.
Replace a packed filter only if you know the correct size and normal procedure. A clogged filter can reduce airflow and increase motor wear.
Move furniture, rugs, boxes, or closed dampers that block airflow. Note whether the issue affects the whole home or only a few rooms.
Note whether the outdoor unit runs, the blower moves air, or water or ice is visible. Photograph an error code only if you can do so without touching equipment.
